Support Drag Queen Story Hour
To Our Fabulous Supporters,
From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank you for standing up for Drag Queen Story Hour.
In a time when public schools and libraries are under attack like never before for offering books that celebrate racial and gender diversity, DQSH events introduce readers of all ages to stories that celebrate LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and other marginalized voices. Whether in person or online, our wonderfully diverse roster of drag performers provide young people with a taste of unabashedly queer community, history, and role models.
As any queen, king, or royal being will tell you: the best drag transforms hearts and minds. Drag performers (and especially trans performers of color) have been at the forefront of LGBTQ+ activism for decades, from leading the Stonewall uprising, to raising funds for communities in need, to even running for president! It is in this spirit of service that we take our job as community builders and leaders very seriously. Our library-trained drag storytellers read books that foreground much-needed topics like standing up to bullies and making social change through art and activism. We know that in doing so, we’re not only bringing smiles to children’s faces, but also encouraging young leaders to ask critical questions and imagine a more just and sparkly world for everyone.
As you know, 2021 was a difficult year. We continued to adapt to the ongoing pandemic and the “new normal” it has created. But despite that, DQSH has celebrated many successes this year. Across our global network, we presented more than 150 community events, employing dozens of storytellers, and partnering with world-class organizations from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Brooklyn Museum, and WorldPride (hosted by the Swedish government), to local libraries, schools, and community groups across the world.
At an organizational level, we have continued to grow and mature. At the beginning of 2021, we spun off from our fiscal sponsor to incorporate as our own organization. We have prioritized increasing our stipends for storytellers (many of whom have been deeply affected by the pandemic) as well as dedicating more resources for staff positions to support emerging chapters.
We look forward to continuing this growth in 2022. And this is where you come in: we can’t continue this essential work without your help.
Will you show the world you believe in the magic of Drag Queen Story Hour by making a donation of $50 or more to help us reach our year-end fundraising goal of $20,000? Of course, every dollar helps, from $5 to $500 and beyond!
Or, consider joining our sustaining Royal Court by becoming a monthly donor: just choose the option to “make this a monthly donation.” (Or as we like to say: set it and forget it!) Either way, please act now so we can enter 2022 with the resources to slay.
We are so looking forward to a brighter new year — and to more opportunities to gather safely in person. Whether on stage or screen, we look forward to seeing you at a story hour very soon!
