People always ask Drag Queen Story Hour for book recommendations, so we thought we’d share just some of our favorites with you… just in time for your holiday shopping! These recommendations are direct from our libraries to yours, including our queens, librarians, and community members. And some books are so popular, multiple people wanted to share their praise!
We’ll be posting our recommendations all week—and we also want to hear from you! What are your favorite books, whether for story hour or bed time? We’d love short reviews from drag queens, librarians, parents, and especially from kids! Please send your short reviews to Lil Miss Hot Mess with a photo of yourself we can post on our website.
As always, we encourage you to shop at your local bookstore whenever possible, though if you are going to buy online, you can support DQSH through Drag Queen Story Hour on Amazon Smile.

10,000 Dresses
by Marcus Ewert, illustrated by Rex Ray
[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_text]
Panda Dulce says:
10,000 Dresses is excellent because it encourages little ones to follow their visions for themselves, even if the road to actualizing it is rocky. It also doesn’t sugarcoat the fact that queerness potentially comes with familial rejection, but offers the possibility of chosen family as a source of refuge and healing.

Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress
by Christine Baldacchino, illustrated by Isabelle Malenfant
[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_text]
Kween-Kee-Kee (a fabulous kid drag queen) says:
This is one of the first books I read about a boy like me. I’ve been bullied for liking feminine things, so I love that Morris found a way to deal with the mean comments. This book helps me not feel alone and gives me confidence to be myself.

Laura S (a DQSH fan!) says:
When I read Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress, I fell so in love with Morris! And as soon as I fell in love with Morris, my heart broke for all the kids, teens, and adults, who feel pain associated with just being who they are. Morris was an awakening for me. At almost 40 years old! I NEVER had ANY negative feelings towards ANYONE being who they are…I just didn’t THINK about it enough, you know? Morris made me see that we all need to protect everyone’s right to be exactly who they are. I immediately bought copies for my kids, and my 9 nieces and nephews!

Konrad’s Dress (Konrads Klänning)
by Åsa Mendel-Hartvig, illustrated by Caroline Röstlund
[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_text]
Lady Busty says:
Hedvig has been given a blue sparkly dress. She’s sparkling! Konrad has not received anything. Konrad would like to borrow Hedvig’s dress! But what does Grandma find in the basement? Konrad’s Dress is a wonderful book that shows interaction, jealousy between siblings, and that you can wear what you think is nice. Clothes that children like to wear make them feel good and this is reflected in their expression. The book is magical and opens up to many good conversations with the children.
Note that this book is in Swedish! (Thanks to our DQSH Sweden chapter!)
