People always ask Drag Queen Story Hour for book recommendations, so we thought we’d share just some of our favorites with you… just in time for your holiday shopping! These recommendations are direct from our libraries to yours, including our queens, librarians, and community members. And some books are so popular, multiple people wanted to share their praise!
We’ll be posting our recommendations all week—and we also want to hear from you! What are your favorite books, whether for story hour or bed time? We’d love short reviews from drag queens, librarians, parents, and especially from kids! Please send your short reviews to Lil Miss Hot Mess with a photo of yourself we can post on our website.
As always, we encourage you to shop at your local bookstore whenever possible, though if you are going to buy online, you can support DQSH through Drag Queen Story Hour on Amazon Smile.

Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag
by Rob Sanders, illustrated by Steven Salerno
[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_text]
Buffy Wilde says:
Sometimes you do in fact have to school the (literal) children. This fun and colorful — but very honest — history lesson is a reminder to not just “tolerate” but CELEBRATE our differences. It’s Pride Month essential reading, but will also help jumpstart necessary conversations about the impact of hate and bullying year-round.

It’s Okay to Be Different
by Todd Parr
[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_text]
Robyn Banks says:
Usually when I read this, I read the line and then say “right it’s okay to have…” of the form of a statement. It lets them know that it REALLY Is okay.
My favorite reading of the book was during Pride this last summer, and I read “it’s okay to have two have different dads” and a child shouted “I have two daddies!” Or when I read “it’s okay to be adopted…” and a child yelled out “I’m adopted!” It just warmed my heart!

Annie Manildoo says:
It’s Okay to be Different is a fabulous reminder that the things that make us different are the things that make us special! If everyone were exactly the same, what a boring world we’d be living in! The message of this book is beautiful and inclusive and the animation is very quirky and fun!

Sebastian Katz says:
It’s a simple but important message presented in a fun way. And this books offers lots of room to play with voices and movement!

Kenya M. Black says:
This is one of my favorite books because the creativity and imagination of a child will always be free and wild!

The Cardboard Kingdom
by Chad Sell
[/cmsmasters_text][cmsmasters_text]
Rachel Aimee (DQSH NYC’s Executive Director) says:
This graphic novel follows a super diverse group of neighborhood kids over their summer as they use cardboard boxes to make costumes and create their own make-believe world, using fantasy as a way of figuring out conflicts and forming friendships in their real lives. We renewed this book from the library about six times because my son wanted to read it every day for months!
